Among the great religions of the world, Islam enjoys the distinction of bearing a significant name, a name that points to its very essence. Etymologically, the word Islām is derived from the root s-l-m which has multiple meanings, e.g. to keep the peace, to make one’s peace, etc. Therefore a Muslim is one who makes his peace with God and man. Peace with God implies complete submission to His will, and peace with man is not only to refrain from evil or injury to another but also to do good to him; and both these ideas find expression in the Holy Qur’ān as the true essence of the religion of Islam: “Nay,-whoever submits His whole self to Allāh and is a doer of good,- He will get his reward with his Lord; on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve” Islam is thus, in its very inception, the religion of peace, and its two basic doctrines, the Unity of God and the unity or brotherhood of the human race, afford positive proof of its being true to its name.
Islamic terrorism (IT), i.e. acts of terrorism by Muslims who claim to conduct them in the name of Islam, has raised a number of questions among the people. Does Islam really mean peace? What does Islam teach about peace? Does the Qur’ān really contain a number of verses promoting violence? Are the crimes of IT justified in Islam? Does IT represent Islam? Are Muslims allowed to fight against IT? Where did the ideology of IT come from? And so on. Scholars are therefore obliged to respond, and their response should be intellectual. Here we can assume that the ideology of IT is based on a complex system of fallacies that cut the sacred texts from their context, and on a series of devious stratagems that select from the corpus of the law what satisfies their twisted minds….
